HydroSci Samba Server

The HydroSci group has two samba servers that hosts storage that you can mount on your personal computer. There are 3 shares. Two shares are on 1 server and the remaining share is on the other server:

  1. 2 group workspaces - the hydrosci_ws share and the hydrosci_ws2 shares (provided by the hydroscismb.pmc.ucsc.edu samba server)

    • This space is a group share for projects and information that anyone in the hydrosci group can use. By default all files and directories created in this space are read and writable by everyone in the hydrosci group. As such care should be taken in particular with operations such as deleting files and directories. This area is automatically backed up.
  2. personal shares - the hydrosci_pers share (provided by the hydroscibak.pmc.ucsc.edu samba server)

    • This share contains directories for each user for their own network storage use. Each individual directory is only accessible by the user that owns it. This area is automatically backed up.
  3. backup shares - the hydrosci_backup share (provided by the hydroscibak.pmc.ucsc.edu samba server)

    • This is an area you can use to backup files from your personal computer. Each individual directory is only accessible by the user that owns it. This area is intended as a backup of contents that you keep on your personal computer, so it is not backed up. Don't use this area as additional storage, only to backup files that you also keep on your personal computer.

To get access to the HydroSci Samba Server contact us. Provide us with your linux account username and ask for an account on the HydroSci Samba Server. Your password will be the same as your linux account password.

Once you have a samba account you can mount the shares on your personal computer system. Below are instructions for Mac OSX, Windows XP, and Windows 7 machines.

Mounting Samba Shares

Mac OS X

Windows XP

  1. Open your Computer in an Explorer window (not Internet Explorer)
  2. In the menu bar select Tools > Map Network Drive

  3. Select an appropriate drive letter in the Drive field
  4. To mount the hydrosci_ws and hydrosci_ws2 shares:
    • In the Server field type "\\hydroscismb.pmc.ucsc.edu\hydrosci_ws"
    • You can substitute one of the other samba shares (hydrosci_ws or hydrosci_ws2) to connect to a different shared space
  5. To mount the hydrosci_pers and hydrosci_backup share:
    • In the Server field type "\\hydroscibak.pmc.ucsc.edu\hydrosci_pers"
    • You can substitute one of the other samba shares (hydrosci_pers or hydrosci_backup) to connect to a different shared space
  6. Check the "Reconnect at logon" box if you want this share to automount each time you logon
  7. Click Finish
  8. You should then be prompted for your Linux username and password
    1. You may not be prompted if your Windows account uses the same username and password as your linux account

This will mount the shared samba directory on your system for easy access.

Windows 7

  1. Open your Computer in an Explorer window (not Internet Explorer)
  2. In the menu bar select Map Network Drive
  7. Check the "Connect using different credentials" box
  8. Click Finish
  9. You should then be prompted for your Linux username and password

This will mount the shared samba directory on your system for easy access.

Linux

  1. The shares are automatically mounted on the managed linux machines when you access their mount points. You don't need to perform any special mounting procedures
  2. Mount points for these shares on the managed linux machines can be found at:
    1. /proj/hydrosci_ws
    2. /proj/hydrosci_ws2
    3. /proj/hydrosci_pers
    4. /backup/hydrosci_backup

NOTE

Setting labtops and other portable machines to automatically mount the samba shares is not recommended since the mounts will fail and complain when you are off campus.
