Printer connection methods in order of preference:
- LPD (Line Printer Daemon)
- IP Printer
note: do not use a "Shared Printer" as these will disappear at random times and you will not be able to print
Installing a Network Printer Using the Preferred LPD Method
Go to the Apple Menu >> System Preferences and click on "Print & Fax".
Click on the + box.
Click on the "LPD" or "IP Printer" icon.
Enter the full name of the printer (e.g. epsbw.pmc.ucsc.edu or oceanus2.ucsc.edu).
If the correct printer is identified next to "Print Using:" click the Add button and you are ready to print.
If the printer is identified as "Generic Postscript Printer" then you will want to copy the correct ppd file to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/ on your Mac. See below for a listing of available print drivers.
