Mac Printing

Printer connection methods in order of preference:

  1. LPD (Line Printer Daemon)
  2. IP Printer
  3. Bonjour
  4. AppleTalk

note: do not use a "Shared Printer" as these will disappear at random times and you will not be able to print

Installing a Network Printer Using the Preferred LPD Method

  1. Go to the Apple Menu >> System Preferences and click on "Print & Fax".

  2. Click on the + box.

  3. Click on the "LPD" or "IP Printer" icon.

  4. Enter the full name of the printer (e.g. epsbw.pmc.ucsc.edu or oceanus2.ucsc.edu).

  5. If the correct printer is identified next to "Print Using:" click the Add button and you are ready to print.

  6. If the printer is identified as "Generic Postscript Printer" then you will want to copy the correct ppd file to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/ on your Mac. See below for a listing of available print drivers.
