Windows Printing

  • The printing method will differ depending upon your Operating System.

Windows XP

  1. Click the "Printers and Faxes" option which can be found either on the right pane of your start menu or within the control panel.

  2. Click the "Add a Printer" option (usually found in the left panel of the window, or in the top menu of the window).

  3. The "Add Printer Wizard" will open. Click "Next" to begin. In the next window, select the "Network Printer, or a printer attached to another computer" option, then click "Next".

  4. In the following window, select the "Connect to this printer:" option, and type "\\print.pmc.ucsc.edu\PRINTERNAME" where PRINTERNAME should be replaced by the printer you wish to add.

    • EXAMPLE: \\print.pmc.ucsc.edu\epsbw

  5. Click "Next". A message will pop up saying that you are about to "connect to a printer on print and download/install a driver, do you wish to continue?". Click "Yes". The driver will automatically be downloaded to your computer and installed. In the next window, you will be asked if you wish to use this printer as your default printer, choose yes or no as you wish. Then click "Next" and "Finish" to complete the installation.

Windows 7 (and Vista)

  1. Click the "Printers and Devices" option which can be found either on the right pane of your start menu or within the control panel.

  2. Select "Add a Printer" from the toolbar menu, then select "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer".

  3. Click "The printer that I want isn't listed", you do not have to wait for Windows to finish searching for available printers.

    • From this point there are two possible methods, the first method is similar to that used for XP above:

      1. In the "Select a shared printer by name" field, type "\\print.pmc.ucsc.edu\PRINTERNAME" where PRINTERNAME should be replaced by the printer you wish to add.

    • If you receive a message about not identifying a driver for the printer then the above method does not work for your Windows 7 or Vista installation and you may need to use the direct method as outlined below:

      1. Select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" and click "Next".

      2. In the "Hostname or IP address" field type "PRINTERNAME.pmc.ucsc.edu" and click "Next".

      3. Finish adding the printer.

Duplexing and Printer Preferences

  • Once you've successfully added the printer, especially if you used the direct method, you may want to adjust your printers preferences for additional features like Duplexing.
