Using Matlab or ENVI/IDL from off-campus locations

Setup Putty for Tunneling to the License Server

(only needs to be performed once)

Note: If you are familiar with ssh tunneling you may use another ssh client to connect to "public.pmc.ucsc.edu" and tunnel ports 1700 and 1703 on your local host to the same ports on "flexlm.pmc.ucsc.edu".

Note: "SSH Client" version 3.2.x port forwarding setup is broken (attempts to setup port forwarding will cause the client to crash).
  1. Obtain a copy of PuTTY (putty.exe) from:
  2. Put the putty.exe file on your desktop for easy access.
  3. Double click on the putty.exe icon to run it.
  4. In the left-hand "Category" menu click the box next to "Connection" to expand it.
  5. Click the box next to SSH to expand it.
  6. Click "Tunnels".
  7. Under "Add new forwarded port:"
    1. Enter "1700" (without the quotes)" in to the "Source Port" field.
    2. Enter "flexlm.pmc.ucsc.edu:1700" into the "Destination" field.
    3. Click the "Add" button.
    4. This will add a forward in the "Forwarded Ports" list.
    5. Enter "1702" (without the quotes)" in to the "Source Port" field.
    6. Enter "flexlm.pmc.ucsc.edu:1702" into the "Destination" field.
    7. Click the "Add" button.
    8. This will add another forward in the "Forwarded Ports" list.
    9. Enter "1703" (without the quotes)" in to the "Source Port" field.
    10. Enter "flexlm.pmc.ucsc.edu:1703" into the "Destination" field.
    11. Click the "Add" button.
    12. This will a third forward in the "Forwarded Ports" list.
  8. In the left-hand "Category" menu select "Connection".
    1. Check the box next to "Enable TCP keepalives"
  9. In the left-hand "Category" menu select "Data" (under "Connection").
    1. Enter your PMC managed linux machine user name in the "Auto-login username" field.
  10. In the left-hand "Category" menu select "Session" (near the top).
    1. Enter "public.pmc.ucsc.edu" (without the quotes) into the "Host" field.
    2. Click on the "SSH" connection type.
    3. Enter "remote license" in the "Saved Sessions" field.
    4. Click on the "Save Button".
    5. A session called "remote license" should appear in the "Saved Sessions" list.
  11. Close putty.
  12. You are finished setting up putty.
